I usually run through a few songs to warm up, then run through my solo "open mic set" every day (mostly includes 60s-70s covers).

I play psychedelic fuzz rock and blues, so I guess naturally my practice routine is a little less focused than your average rock or metal guy who's actually practicing technique. Buy a $4 planner and keep track of what you worked on and check off how much you actually ended up practicing that day and you'll be surprised! Have fun! I keep a timer on and forget about how long it's taking, and before I know it, the timer goes off. And I usually do this 3-4 times a week, throughout the day 30 minutes or an hour at a time, and my playing has been improving tremendously. I just started this routine about 2 weeks ago because I've noticed my guitar playing has been plateauing. Or sometimes I use this time to compose my own melodies. I still suck at it but it's fun.ģ0+ min learning a song: This includes finger picking or a lead solo. Doesn't have to be exact, but you'll get better as you do it more. Finish with 1-3 min stretch shoulders and back.ģ0 min ear training: Watch youtube videos of guitar/pedal demos and imitate what they're playing. Finish with 1-3 min hand massage.ģ0 min workout: Spider exercises, hammer on/pull offs, finger speed and coordination exercises, exercises I find on the youtube that work both hands. My first lesson is starting next week, so I'm looking forward to getting some real instructions, instead of making shit up as I go along.Įdit: oh, and I run through the scale exercise in major and minor of course, in various keysģ0 min warm up: scales in different modes, finger stretching exercises, right hand techniques and string skipping. That's about all I know how to do so far. Just forcing through the changes, and keeping the rhythm, even though my accuracy is crap right now. Then I practice my chord changes to a metronome.
